Hey there,
Newsletter’s coming in very late. Work has been a lot too especially this past week with a Black Friday mini-campaign I was running for work and I’m happy that it’s ended first and that I picked up all that I did.
This month has been very interesting. And something has remained my go-to word this month: you are a bad bitch, never forget that. This month, I ditched two relationships that weren’t going anywhere - not because I wanted to, but because I had to and it was one of the hardest things I had to do. I kept telling myself that I could go on, but I realized that it wasn’t good for me (and real hot girls won’t do that a la Megan my leader) so I cut it off. There’s still a lot of toxicity in my life, but you know small, small and we’ll get rid of them all.
I also doubted myself this month. A lot. Impostor syndrome is such a huge thing. There was a time I resumed at a new office and it felt like I wasn’t doing enough because I kept asking myself why I was receiving my salary, to be honest. I think it explains why small affirmations go a long way for me. There are people who re-affirm my work and it’s always so good to hear it. Again, I’ll keep remembering I’m a bad bitch and getting past all of this. You should too :)
All The Good Stuff
The best thing I saw this month was The Crown. I’ve always been a fan of British television, and it’s old-time England like Downton Abbey so hook it. This season focuses on everybody’s favourite, Princess Di and even though you’ve read the stories and watched the documentaries, nothing prepared me for the ten episodes. I felt sorry for Diana (played by the brilliant Emma Corrin). Anyway, check it out! It features Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham-Carter and Gillian Anderson.
I also watched Grand Army and The Queen’s Gambit this month, both on Netflix and both really good shows. Grand Army strikes up a very interesting conversation, and I’m sure everybody has heard something about The Queen’s Gambit. I’m in the process of rewatching Girlfriends too and it’s really hilarious stuff!
I feel like I’ve shared these everywhere but here are some of the finest articles I read this month
This one I wrote about Rattlesnake and how it doesn’t shine so bright
Also liked Megan’s personal article about her miscarriage.
This very interesting article about how a government-aligned Twitter network tried to infiltrate the #EndSARS movement
And then this one that had me asking where my friends were even though I’m not 30
This other Zikoko article about this woman who is my mentor and hero
There are a LOT of music albums to listen to. Currently, I’m really enjoying Sam Smith’s ‘Love Goes’, Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ and Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ a little too much. I also made a playlist of Nigerian love songs on Apple Music. Too lazy to transfer to Spotify so wahala for who no get Apple Music. Oh, you can also see the other songs I’m listening to here.
If you’re looking for really nice content on YouTube, here’s
Sam Smith and Labrinth singing Love Goes. Orgasmic
My friend, Harry’s documentary called Defiance.
A Day In Wizkid’s life. Watch the live performance. Best thing!
Serious Conversations
I was going to talk about impostor syndrome and how it eats into you this month. How one person’s words, probably said with little or no thought can be the architect to you thinking so poorly about yourself. Then, I found this article that accurately explained what I felt.
And the way she breaks it down is so good that it reflects multiple types of impostor syndrome and explains what you can do about it. So please read it and let’s see how it goes.
I’ll also add this article because I read somewhere that most of the feelings of being impostors come from work and Toni Morrison’s article is such a great guide to approaching work
Here’s to a smooth December.
Love,
Franklin.
